Passing a round is good. Understanding what your results say about your methods is better. Data from repeated participation builds a record that can help a laboratory estimate measurement uncertainty for specific tests and methods.

Where PT data fits

  • Method validation and verification. Compare your performance against peers using the same or different methods.
  • Uncertainty estimation. Long-run PT results complement validation data and internal quality control data.
  • Method equivalency. Statistical comparison shows whether two methods give results that differ significantly.

Regulators and accreditation bodies increasingly expect uncertainty to be understood and reported. Treat each PT round as a data point in a larger picture rather than a one-off pass or fail.
